I was totally enthralled by these photographs, I wanted to turn each page to see the next picture but I didn't want to leave the one that I was looking at because the closure I looked the more that I saw. He really captured the moment! When is the next book coming out?

Fever Dreams Jeff Antebi 9780983951407 Books Reviews

I first saw images of Juarez on Jeff Antebi's website back in 2010. I was startled by what I saw. It was my first glimpse into what was happening in Mexico in pictures. I'd heard about it, but the impact of Antebi's photography made me realize how little I truly understood.

Following his photography over the past few years, I have come to appreciate the humanity amongst the inhumanity that he captures. There are absolutely adorable images of children in the abandoned wreckage of Haiti. This one child in particular is the reason I needed the book most- if he can smile like that amid the rubble, I can smile amid my luxury even in tough times. I also wanted to get the book as I'm researching Juarez for a project I'm working on.
Fever Dreams is nearly impossible to describe in words because you have to absorb the photos to fully comprehend what an incredible photojournalist is at work here. The photos jet across the globe -- Haiti, Brazil, Thailand, Afghanistan, Mexico -- in a colorful and punctuated manner that ties together themes of poverty, violence, and suffering. I've seen Jeff's photos a hundred times and still every time they move me. From the opening photo that conveys a young woman's loss of a loved one in Juarez' drug war to the contagious smile of a Haitian child... this book never stops surprising, analyzing, and conveying. I'm glad Antebi added the text in the opening that introduces what you're about to experience. It provided perspective and suspense. This is my favorite photo book and you'll enjoy every page turn.
"Fever Dreams" is a remarkable showcase for conflict documentarian and photographer Jeff Antebi's knack for capturing still images in the midst of turmoil, uncertainty, and sometimes flat-out violence that not only tell a story, but also cause the viewer to feel the on-the-ground emotion of the situation as well. Antebi's photos often show stories within stories, and it's this multi-dimensional imagery that makes this more than just a coffee table book, but rather a volume filled with images that can be savored, discussed, and reconsidered over and over. Looking forward to future collections from this talented artist.
I purchased through Kickstarter. I find myself thumbing through the book frequently. Jeff has an amazing sense of perspective. He takes a lone child and wild pig standing in the distance amid a sea of trash and makes them feel as immediate as the coffee cup in your hand right next to you. He uses color, lines, space, darkness and depth to convey both the immediacy of the horror he witnessed and the surprising joy he found (in the eyes of children, old women). There is a stark immediacy to the work. Right here/Right now. Broken glass. Armed MPs. Drug kingpins in a favella. Singing church choirs. When you read this book, you can't help but be moved, consumed, and even changed. Jeff is a unique talent and we are lucky he chose to publish this for all of us.
I was fortunate to discover Jeff Antebi's photo essay for "Fever Dreams" through KickStarter a year before the book was actually published. I received a large format color photograph of one of the Haiti images that depicts a view of the world that I am totally unfamilar with. I've hung the framed photograph above my home office desk to remind me of the reality of the world we collectively live in today. The images throughout the book both startle and comfort the causal viewer. Good art is experience, and the book "Fever Dreams" provides a direct experience to good photographic art. Can't wait for Jeff's next artistic venture.
Antebi has a wonderful eye, and he uses it to look at some of the most turbulent and compelling places on the planet.
Thought provoking imagery. Perfectly captured, emotional visual storytelling on important (and harrowing) subjects. Tragedy and beauty taken together. It's a wonderful debut.
